NGF/PISI
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF has launched a peace and inclusive security initiative, PISI to tackle insecurity, conflicts and violence in the country.
NGF Chairman and Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, in a statement said launch of the PISI was to provide more inclusive and collaborative platform to drive an urgent holistic response to the current challenges facing the country.
While stressing the need for consensual action on security governance, governor Fayemi condemned the escalation in the spate of violence and coordinated criminal activities that have undermined government authority and waned public trust.
He said Nigerian government has intensified efforts to tackle the security and humanitarian crisis, adding that the initiative will consolidate on the measures taken so far for peaceful and united nation.
2023/GOVS RESOLUTION
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, has thrown its weight behind the Southern Nigeria governors’ resolution on open grazing, the 2023 presidency, and electronic transmission of votes.
OYC made its decision known in a statement signed by its president-general, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, and the Secretary-General, Comr. Obinna Achionye, admitting that the decision of the Governors was apt and in the best interest of Nigerians.
The governors had during their last meeting re-echoed their ban on open-grazing of cattle but expressed total support for electronic transmission of results during the 2023 elections, and shifting of presidency ticket to the south.
The youth group said only election riggers would be scared of electronic transmission of election results also hailing the governors for maintaining their stand on open grazing.
It however, warned that they should not be intimidated by anyone, as this is the only way to secure Nigerians against murderous herdsmen.
UK/TRAVELS
Britain has revealed plans to scrap quarantine for fully-vaccinated arrivals from other Countries.
The United Kingdom transport minister, grant Shapps revealed this a day after announcing a rule change for those in Britain who had had both shots.
Shapps said in the coming weeks fully vaccinated British residents arriving England from medium risk amber countries would no longer have to self-isolate on arrival since they had been vaccinated twice.
He however said the process of recognising vaccination status would focus on countries administering the world health organisation, WHO’s approved vaccines.
US/CHINESE COMPANIES
The United States is set to add not less than 14 Chinese companies to its economic blacklist for alleged human rights abuses and high-tech surveillance in Xinjiang.
Two sources related to the matter made this known, explained that the U.S commerce department action followed the addition of five other companies and other Chinese entities to the blacklist.
The sources said the additions to the commerce department’s entity list were part of the current U.S’ administration’s efforts to hold china accountable for human rights violations.
However, reacting, China dismissed the allegation of genocide and forced labour in Xinjiang but noted that its policies are necessary to stamp out separatists and religious extremists.
SRI LANKA/MINISTERIAL SEAT
Sri Lanka President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed his younger brother, basil Rajapaksa as the Country’s Finance Minister.
President Rajapaksa appointed basil in a move that further tightened the family’s grip over the island nation.
Basil was on July 8, 2021 sworn in as a member of parliament and took over as minister of finance from prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, also his older brother.
He is said to hold dual United States-Sri Lankan citizenship, and now takes control of the country’s important institutions, including the treasury and central bank under his purview.
According to the presidential media, Mahinda was also given an additional role as minister of economic policies and plan implementation, division.
TALIBAN/AFGHAN CRISIS
Taliban fighters have seized control of a key district in western Afghanistan that includes an important border crossing with Iran.
Afghan Security Officials disclosed this as the armed group continues its rapid military advances around the country.
Last week, report said the Taliban overran areas bordering five countries, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, China and Pakistan as foreign forces end their 20-year intervention and the domestic security situation deteriorates.
Speaking to Newsmen on condition of anonymity, two senior security officials said the Islam Qala border crossing with Iran, located in Herat province, had fallen to the Taliban and that afghan security and customs officials had fled across the border.
India/soldiers killings
Not less than eight suspected rebels and two Indian Soldiers have been killed in series of counter insurgency operations in Indian-administered Kashmir.
India’s Military in a statement, confirmed two soldiers and two rebels were killed in a clash along the line of control at the highly militarised de facto frontier that divides Kashmir and nuclear-armed rivals, Pakistan and India.
The military stated that the fighting erupted after soldiers intercepted a group of armed men who crossed into the Indian-administered portion of Kashmir from the Pakistani side of the territory.
Many shops were shut in parts of the disputed region.
BANGLADESH FACTORY/INFERNO
Bangladesh police have confirmed the death of not less than 43 people in a massive fire in a food factory.
As emergency services bring out bodies from the continuous flamed building, police said the blaze broke out in the factory in Rupganj, an industrial town of 25km east of the capital, Dhaka, for nearly 24 hours later.
Report said many of the 30 injured leapt for their lives from upper floors in the complex while it was still unclear how many people were trapped inside.
Though distraught relatives outside and other factory workers said they feared that others might not have escaped.
SPORTS
Bjorn Kuipers has become the first Dutch referee for 2020 European championship final between England and Italy on July 10, 2021 at Wembley stadium.
Information has it that Kuipers began officiating in the Dutch leagues before working his way up the ranks to become an international referee in 2006.
The 48 year old referee, had previously officiated two Europa league finals and one champions league final, and was also part of the referees’ team at euro 2012 and 2016 and the last two world cups.
Meanwhile, the Sunday, July 10’s dream appointment will be Kuipers’ seventh UEFA competition final appearance.
