FG/ASUU

Leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will today meet with Federal Government Officials to iron out issues relating to alleged non-implementation of the Union’s agreement with the Government last December.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, Msade the confirmation while speaking in a telephone interview with Newsmen.

Osodeke hinted that the meeting, which was at the instance of the minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngige, is scheduled to hold at the ministry’s conference room in Abuja.

However, he debunked claims that Asuu issued a strike threat, noting that the Federal Government was only notified on implementation of the agreement signed with the union before its National Executive Committee, NEC meeting coming up in August.

BUHARI/JOHNSON

British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has assured of the European Country’s readiness to assist Nigeria in its war against terrorism. 

Johnson gave the assurance while holding bilateral talks with President Muhammadu Buhari on sidelines of the global education summit held in London.

A communique released to the press by President Buhari’s special media aide revealed that both leaders pointed out that to end the various forms of Terrorism, the judicial process must run without interference.

The due also discussed ways to increase trade between the two Countries, develop solar and wind power, leadership of the commonwealth going forward, and other matters of mutual interest.

BIDEN/COVID-19

As part of measures to enable wide-spread vaccination across the United States, President Joe Biden is appealing to states to offer the sum of 100 dollars to the newly vaccinated so as to address the flagging jab rates.

President Biden made the plea while addressing a press conference from the white house, saying the new measures are sequel to the highly contagious Delta variant’s spread in the Country.

Describing covid-19 as a pandemic of the unvaccinated, the president charged state governments to use money from the 1.9 trillion dollars American rescue plan legislation to fund the proposed 100 dollars incentives.

Meanwhile, the U.S President assured that the Federal Government will fully reimburse small or medium-sized businesses that provide Workers paid time off to get vaccinated but promised that Government Workers who refuse to get vaccinated will not be fired.

AUSTRALIA/COVID-19

In a bid to battle the persistent rise in covid-19 cases across Australia, the government has deployed hundreds of soldiers to the Nation’s largest City, Sydney, to help enforce a five-week lockdown.

The country’s state police minister, David Elliott, disclosed to reporters that the Australian Defense Force Soldiers will undergo training before beginning unarmed patrols on Monday, August 2.

Elliott explained that soldiers will join police in virus hotspots to ensure people are following the rules, which include a 10 Kilometer travel limit.

The planned deployment has however generated heated controversy across the Country with many questioning the need for Military intervention in a Liberal matter.

CHINA/COVID-19

The fast spreading Covid outbreak first discovered in the city of Nanjing has been described as the most extensive contagion after Wuhan.

In a statement made available to journalists, Chinese officials bemoaned that almost 200 people have been infected since the virus was first detected in Nanjing’s busy airport on July 20.

They therefore announced the suspension of all flights from the Nanjing airport until august 11, adding that all 9.3 million of the city’s residents, including visitors, will be tested.

In a related development, Thailand’s health ministry sounded the alarm over Bangkok’s dire lack of hospital beds and isolation facilities as covid-19 cases and deaths soared to a new record.

H’KONG/SECURITY LAW

A top court in Hong Kong has sentenced the first person convicted under the country’s national security law to nine years imprisonment.

In its ruling, a three-man panel of justices sentenced tong Ying-Kit to jail for terrorist activities and inciting secession.

Addressing Reporters outside the court, counsel of the convict, Clive Grossman, vowed to appeal both the verdict and sentence against the 24-year old, who was accused of ramming a motorcycle displaying an anti-government protest flag into police officers.

However, critics voiced concern over the watershed ruling, lamenting that such verdict will have long-term implications for the city’s judicial landscape.

PAKISTAN/TALIBAN

Pakistani Authorities have debunked reports making the rounds that the country’s fighters are aiding the militia group known as the Taliban in its fight against the Afghan Government.

Pakistani Prime Minister, Imran Khan, made the denial in a televised interview, describing reports that Pakistani fighters crossed the border into Afghanistan to aid the Taliban as absolute nonsense.

Khan, who said Pakistan suffered tremendously during the long U.S war in Afghanistan, pledged that his government would not allow Washington to set up any bases inside Pakistan to do intelligence work or carry out counter-insurgency operations.

Meanwhile, he hinted that Pakistan pushed the Taliban to negotiate with the U.S over ending the conflict in Afghanistan, maintaing that an inclusive government remains the best political outcome in Afghanistan.

SPORTS

Some of the disqualified Nigerian athletes at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have taken to the streets to protest their situation.

The protesting Athletes reportedly carried placards with various inscriptions such as “why should we suffer for someone else’s negligence”, “all we wanted to do was compete” and “we are not just alternates but potential medalists.” to press home their demands.

The Athletics Integrity Unit, AIU of world athletics had on Wednesday evicted 10 Nigerian Athletes from the track and field events of the games village for not meeting up to the three out-of-competition tests needed for eligibility.

The Sport governing Body, however, only cleared 12 of the 19 Athletes that were set to represent team Nigeria in Athletics, causing the team to miss potential Medal victories in hammer throwing and discus.

SPORTS

Argentine forward, Lionel Messi, is concluding plans to pen a new five-year contract in Barcelona.

A report sighted by journalists hinted that Messi is currently in Camp Nou as he prepares to sign the deal worth in the region of 250,000 pounds a week.

According to the report, the 34-year-old already has a verbal agreement with the La liga giants over the new deal, which will see him take a 50 per cent pay cut.

The 10-time La liga winner, who has been on holiday since helping Argentina win the Copa America earlier this month, is currently a free agent, as his old contract expired.
