Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has backed calls in some quarters demanding the regulation of social media in Nigeria.

Gbajabiamila made the call while addressing newsmen, pointing out that regulating social media will protect all Nigerians from its negative aspect.

The speaker revealed that the national assembly has been contemplating regulating social media for a long time but has faced harsh criticism over attempts to regulate the online interactive platforms.

The federal government had on June 4 suspended Twitter from operating in the country, asserting that Nigerians were using the platform to push for the country’s disintegration.


The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, is demanding the release of hundreds of abducted students all over the country.

NANS president, Sunday Asefon, made this known in a statement released to reporters after leading members of the association to meet with the controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.

Asefon explained that the meeting focused on actions and efforts needed to ensure the safety and security of Nigerian students on all campuses and the release of innocent students in the captivity of their abductors.

He however vowed that the students’ body will do everything necessary to ensure schools are free again, adding that the association will continue to engage and dialogue with stakeholders to ensure school safety.


In a bid to combat a surge in the highly contagious delta coronavirus variant in South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa has re-imposed a two-week restriction on the country.

Speaking in a televised address to the nation, President Ramaphosa lamented that South Africa, which is the worst-hit country on the African continent, is facing a massive resurgence of covid-19 infection.

Ramaphosa who decried that the country’s health facilities are stretched to the limit, therefore placed the country on alert level four, just one level below a full lockdown.

According to the new measures, all gatherings are banned, except for funerals where numbers will be capped at 50, while eateries and restaurants can no longer serve sit-down meals, and will only be allowed to sell food for take-away or delivery.


Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, have imposed a curfew on Beni, a city in North Kivu province, following reports of more planned attacks on the city.

In a statement forwarded to the press, the Mayor of Beni, Narcisse Muteba, ordered citizens to stay out of streets after series of bombings rocked the city.

The recent development comes after a makeshift bomb went off in a catholic church in the city, injuring two women and was followed later by a suicide bombing outside a bar.

It would be recalled that President Felix Tshisekedi had on May 6 placed Beni along with another region under a state of siege in a bid to clamp down on rebel violence in the region.


Sweden’s Prime Minister, Stefan Lofven, has stepped down from office after seven years in power.

His resignation letter comes a week after he lost a vote of no confidence over a controversial plan to ease rent controls for new-build apartments in parliament.

Report indicated that Lofven became the first Swedish leader ever to lose a confidence vote in parliament after the opposition party withdrew its support for his government over its housing market plans, triggering massive debates across the European nation.


As officials in the United Kingdom battle to curtail a spread in covid-19 cases, the country’s former home secretary, Sajid Javid, has been appointed as the new Health Secretary.

This comes barely days after the former health secretary, Matt Hancock, was forced to resign following revelations that he broke coronavirus rules by kissing one of his aides in his office.

Reacting to his appointment as the new secretary of state for health and social care, Javid described the development as a great honour, promising to do all within his powers to live up to all expectations.

Meanwhile, the U.K government is planning to launch an investigation into how footage of the former health minister kissing and embracing his aide found its way into the media.

That was the British leader, Keir Starmer, reacting to the former health secretary, Matt Hancock’s resignation there.


Amidst fresh outbreaks of the highly contagious delta variant ravaging across Australia, the country’s COVID-19 response committee will today, June 28, hold an emergency meeting to fine-tune measures to resolve the situation.

The country’s federal treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, announced this to newsmen, expressing concern that the country is entering a new phase of the pandemic as 18 new local cases were reported in New South Wales State.

Frydenberg who hinted that Australia is presently on a two-week lockdown, explained that during the emergency meeting, the National Security Committee chaired by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, will receive briefings from the chief medical officer on the current state of affairs.

Reacting, the Premier of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, lamented that the country is recording almost 100 percent transmission within households with the recent strain, urging the government to be prepared as the numbers could go up considerably.


The U.S Defence department known as Pentagon has launched air strikes against Iran-backed militia groups in the Iraqi-Syrian border region.

In a statement issued to newsmen, pentagon officials disclosed that President Joe Biden ordered the attack in response to drone attacks by Iran-backed militia groups against U.S personnel and facilities in Iraq,

According to the statement, the defensive air strikes hit operational and weapons storage facilities located in Syria and in Iraq and occupied by several Iran-backed militia groups.

Report indicated that this is the second round of air strikes that President Biden authorised against Iran-backed militias since taking office in January.


No fewer than seven people have died and dozens of others injured in an explosion that rocked Dhaka, the federal capital of Bangladesh on June 27.

Dhaka’s city Police Commissioner, Shafiqul Islam, made this known to newsmen, saying the incident occurred on the ground floor of a three-storey building on a busy street in the city’s Moghbazar area.

Islam confirmed that no fewer than 50 persons have been admitted to various hospitals, with seven other nearby buildings and three buses damaged in the explosion.

He however revealed that the cause of the blast is yet to be ascertained, adding that investigation to ascertain the cause of the explosion is underway.
