NYSC/CERTIFICATE

Director-General of the National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier-General Shuaibu Ibrahim, has announced that the discharge certificate for corps members will henceforth include the course of study and the date of graduation.

NYSC Director of Corps Mobilization, Victoria Ango, made this known in a statement, noting that the details will also be on NYSC certificate of exemption.

Ango explained that the plan was in line with the management’s resolve to standardize records and will begin with the 2021 batch ‘A’ service year.

However, she added that request for changes in date of graduation and courses of study would no longer be entertained in order to avoid deviation from senate/academic board approved uploads.

S’LEONE/PARLIAMENT

Legislators in Sierra Leone have voted unanimously in favor of an amendment which seeks to abolish death penalty in the West African country.

The bill, which comes more than two decades after Sierra Leone carried out its last execution, will see capital punishment replaced with life imprisonment or a minimum 30-year jail term for crimes such as murder or mutiny.

In their reaction, rights and advocacy groups hailed the amendment as a right decision that will allow judges interpret the law and pass sentence in individual cases, particularly in cases where the person convicted is a victim of sexual or gender-based violence.

In the meantime, President Julius Maada Bio is expected to sign the bill into law soon, a move that will make Sierra Leone the 23rd African country to abolish capital punishment.

GHANA/MPs

Some Ghanaian members of parliament have drawn up a draft legislation which, among others, proposes a 10-year jail term for people who promote LGBT+ activities through mainstream or social media.

The draft measure titled “the promotion of proper human rights and Ghanaian family values bill 2021” also proposes a fine or a prison term of up to three years on individuals who engage in non-heterosexual sex.

Although some Ghanaians expressed concern about its potential to violate the rights of members of the LGBT+ community and activists, the bill’s lead sponsor, Sam George, maintained that the matter is not a human rights issue and should be considered and passed.

The bill has, however, been submitted to Ghana’s speaker of parliament for review.

U.N/SOUTH SUDAN

The United Nation’s Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan, UNMISS, has decried the increasing rate of violence against aid workers in different parts of the country.

UNMISS Chief, Nicholas Haysom, expressed this while fielding questions from reporters in Juba, South Sudan’s Federal Capital City.

Haysom bemoaned that in May, more than one million dollars of humanitarian supplies and assets were looted and destroyed during armed attacks in the eastern U.N, affecting the delivery of assistance to an estimated 130 thousand people.

The U.N Chief who lamented that four humanitarian workers were killed in the line of duty this year, therefore demanded an end to acts of criminality, adding that those perpetrating violence and looting must be brought to justice.

BIDEN/COVID-19

United States President, Joe Biden, has expressed frustration over the slowing covid-19 vaccination rate across the North American country.

President Biden expressed this while speaking at a televised town hall in Cincinnati, Ohio, lamented that the spread of the delta variant has led to a surge in infections around the country.

He, therefore, harped on the need for Americans to step up and get vaccinated against the virus so as to nip it in the bud and also expressed optimism that children under the age of 12 will be approved for vaccination in the coming months.

In another development, the U.S president approved up to 100 million dollars emergency funds to resettle afghan refugees.

CHINA/U.S

China is concluding plans to impose sanctions on several United States individuals and organizations.

This is in response to recent U.S sanctions on Chinese officials in Hong Kong imposed because of their role in the security crackdown in the territory.

Reacting, China’s foreign ministry which described the U.S sanctions as a grave violation of international laws, explained that the Chinese sanctions would target individuals and entities including former U.S commerce secretary, Wilbur Ross.

Responding, white House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, told reporters that the U.S was undeterred by China’s retaliation, stressing that the counter-sanctions portray how Beijing punishes private citizens, companies and civil society organizations as a way to send political signals.

HAITI/UNREST

Haitians have finally bid farewell to late President Jovenel Moise, who was assassinated in his private residence by unknown gunmen on Wednesday, July 7.

The open-air funeral of the 53-year-old Moise was held under tight security in Cap-Haitien, the main city in his native Northern region, just over two weeks after his assassination rattled the entire country.

In her tribute, the late president’s widow, Martine, who was severely injured in the attack that killed her husband, lamented that the deceased was savagely murdered, demanding justice rather than revenge or violence.

The Haitian police had earlier announced that more than 20 people have so far been arrested in connection with the assassination, most of them Colombians, asserting that the plot was organized by Haitians with political ambitions and links outside the country.

INDIA/MONSOON

Intense rescue and search efforts are currently underway in India after landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rains killed no fewer than 110 persons in the western state of Maharashtra, with many feared missing.

Report says rescue crews, including the Indian navy and disaster authorities, are racing to evacuate survivors after the rains overwhelmed hundreds of villages, swept away houses, killed the victims and left residents stranded.

In his reaction, the state’s Chief Minister, Udhav Thackeray, called an emergency meeting, where he directed officials to provide aid to those affected.

On his part, Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and promised to provide necessary assistance to the affected.

SPORTS

A 21-year-old Chinese Shooter, Yang Qian, has emerged as the first athletes to win gold medal in the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Olympics games.

Qian claimed top honors in the women’s 10 Metre air rifle competition after scoring a record breaking 251.8 points at the games held at the Asaka shooting range.

Addressing newsmen after receiving her medal from president of the International Olympic Committee, IOC, Thomas Bach, the overjoyed champion described the victory as unbelievable, adding that the golden medal is a gift to her country.
