Buhari/plateau massacre

President muhammadu buhari has ordered nigerian military to subdue perpetrators of the ongoing massacre in plateau.

Commander of the special task force, operation safe haven, general ali conveyed president buhari’s directive while addressing the troops deployed in tangoron community of riyom local government area of the state.

Ali who said the president asked the army to gun down anybody seen carrying illegal weapon in the state,  noted that the time frame to carry out the president’s order is ten days, urging the troops to go into the bush and clear all perpetrators of evil wherever they are hiding.

While noting that despite heavy troops’ presence in the state, the army commander lamented that death and rape of scores of indigenes in broad daylight keep increasing, hence the need for the operation but charged the troops to be more careful in order not to injure innocent souls.

Army/welfare flight

The chief of army staff, lt. Gen, faruk yahaya has flagged off flight for troops of joint task force operation hadin kai in a bid to ensure the welfare of nigerian troops.

Yahaya, in his remark during the flag off ceremony at the nigerian air force base maiduguri, borno state said welfare of troops is one of his cardinal focus for the nigerian army, stating that it was in that regard that the initiative for welfare flight was birthed.

He stated that the effort was to boost the morale of the troops as battle against insurgency continues across the country, adding that the flight had been scheduled to cover 3 main hubs, namely lagos, abuja and maiduguri.

The army chief further noted that the troops from lagos would be housed and managed at ikeja cantonment, while those in abuja would be at the nigerian army forward operational base and those in maiduguri would be at the headquarters theatre command respectively.

Pdp/secondus

The peoples democratic party, pdp national legal adviser, emmanuel enoidem says only a national convention can remove the national working committee, nwc or any national officer.

Enoidem stated this in a communique after a sunday night meeting held by some nwc members in abuja, saying resignation of embattled pdp national working committee chairman, uche secondus was put to vote at the meeting.

He stated that 6 members voted for the sack or resignation of the chairman and 3 members abstained from voting but said in the pdp’s constitution, only the national chairman or a summon by two-third of nwc members can convene a meeting.

The legal adviser therefore noted that the action of the officials was in utter disdain, adding that there is no provision in the party’s constitution which donates powers to any individuals to ask an officer of the party to resign for any reason whatsoever.

Ondo/nard

Resident doctors in ondo state have appealed to the state government to harken to their demands so as to return to their designated post.

Speaking to newsmen, the general secretary of university of medical sciences teaching hospital ondo chapter, unimedth, dr john mathew, urged the government to look into their matter and respond to their requests for the sake of lives of the patients at the state hospitals and the health sector in general.

Mathew also appealed to the state government to accede to the doctors basic demands which includes unpaid five months salaries, adoption of the medical residency training act of 2017, among other demands.

It would be noted that the association of resident doctors, unimedth chapter, embarked on an indefinite strike action on june 5, 2021, two months before the national body of the association declared the nationwide strike, to press home their demands.

The vice chairman, northern states and federal capital territory, fct of the christian association of nigeria, can, rev. John hayab has opined that nigerians need a leader who can unite and take the people out of their present security challenges and economic woes.

Rev. Hayab, in a statement issued to newsmen noted that those talking about the age and region of the next president were only out to start an agenda that would further divide nigerians and put the country in a more difficult situation.

The can vice chairman therefore warned leaders of the country against unhealthy moves while he appealed to nigerians not to allow short-sighted and selfish considerations to becloud their reasoning, saying they need to shine their eyes in order to have a leader that is truly nationalistic in all spheres of life for the country to have a sense of direction.

Sudan/dialogue

A regional african trade body, the intergovernmental authority on development, igad has called on the two rival military factions of sudan’s people’s liberation army-in opposition, spla-io in south sudan to open the path for dialogue after deadly fighting at the weekend.

Igad executive secretary, workneh gebeyehu made the call on his offical twitter handle, urging  the leaders to open the avenues of dialogue to settle differences in a peaceful manner so as to safeguard the implementation of the revitalised agreement on the resolution of the conflict.

It would be recalled that clashes erupted on august 8 after south sudan’s vice president, riek machar’s rivals declared this week that they had deposed machar as the head of the party and its military forces.

The igad executive secretary however called for an emergency meeting of its foreign ministers to intervene in the clashes ongoing in the country, saying the current political situation in the young nation required urgent attention.

Us/taliban

The united states has announced plans to organise a peace talk with the talibans in a bid to stop their military offensive attack after the armed group seized a string of afghan provincial capitals.

The u.s department of states revealed this to newsmen, disclosing that the u.s special envoy to afghanistan, zalmay khalilzad, will be in doha to help formulate a joint international response meeting to the rapidly deteriorating situation in afghanistan.

The department futher stated that several meetings had been scheduled over three days to discuss the situation in afghanistan.

It revealed that governmental and organisational representatives from the region and beyond, would also be attending the meetings to press for a reduction of violence and ceasefire in the country.

Bangladesh/vaccine

Bangladesh has begun vaccinating thousands of rohingya muslims in the world’s largest refugee settlement amid a surge in covid-19 infections in the country.

The chief health official in bazar district, mahbubur rahman revealed this in a telephone conversation with newsmen, saying 48,000 rohingya, aged 55 and above will be inoculated between today, tuesday august 10 and august 12 with the help of the united nations agencies.

Rahman who noted that this is just the beginning, stated that all adult rohingya people would  be vaccinated in phases as aid workers have long warned of a potential humanitarian disaster if there is a significant outbreak in the refugee camps, bazar border district where over a million rohingya who fled a brutal military crackdowns in neighbouring myanmar have found sanctuary.

He further called for united efforts by national agencies and international organisations to help vaccinate all adults in the camps.
