N’EAST/INSURGENCY

Governors of the Northeastern axis of Nigeria are tasking the military to take advantage of the current division among insurgents to sustain its momentum in the fight against insurgency in the region.

The governors gave the charge at the 5th edition of the Northeast Governors’ Forum held at the Taraba state government house in Jalingo.

In their separate speeches, they also called on the federal government to extend the exploration of oil to the chad basins in order to put the northeast states on the list of oil-rich states.

On their parts, the Governor of Borno State and Chairman of the forum along with Professor Babagana Zulum and the Host Governor, Darius Ishaku, harped on the need for more infrastructural development in the northeast, including electricity supply.

WHO/COVID-19 PATIENTS

The world health organization, W.H.O, has announced the addition of a lifesaving drug for patients who are critically ill or have a severe case of covid-19 known as Interleukin-6, IL-6 receptor blockers to its list of treatments for the respiratory virus.

W.H.O’s Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, made the announcement in a statement issued to newsmen as covid-19 pandemic continues to accelerate across the globe.

Ghebreyesus explained that the drugs worked well when used alongside a class of drug that lowers inflammation in the body called corticosteroids for patients with severe cases of covid-19, who often suffer from an overreaction of the immune system as it act to suppress the overreaction.

The W.H.O boss added that administering the drugs resulted in 15 fewer deaths per one thousand patients and would reduce the number of critically ill patients put on a ventilator percent.

SYDNEY/COVID-19

As part of efforts to curb the raging surge of covid-19 across Australia, authorities in the state of New South Wales, NSW, have announced a week-long extension of Sydney’s lockdown measures which were due to end on Friday, July 9.

The state premier, Gladys Berejiklian, announced this in an interactive session with newsmen, warning that the new cases could rise as the country’s biggest city grapples with the highly infectious delta variant.

Describing the delta strain as a game-changer, Berejiklian cautioned that the new variant is extremely transmissible and more contagious than any other form of the virus, directing that the stay at home order should be extended till July 16

Sydney, which is home to a fifth of Australia’s 25 million people, entered a severe lockdown on June 26 as the country battles its worst outbreak of the year with   total infections topping 350 since the first case was detected.

U.S/CAPITOL ATTACK

United States President, Joe Biden, is calling on congress to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the capitol building by supporters of Donald Trump, describing the incident as an existential crisis for democracy.

Biden made the call as the U.S marks six months after the incident, noting that not even during the civil war did insurrectionists breach the country’s capitol, the citadel of its democracy.

While terming the event as a disorder, he maintained that such an occurrence posed an existential crisis and a test on survival of democracy in the U.S.

The U.S President therefore called on people of goodwill and courage to investigate the riot and its origins and as well charged democrats, republicans and independents to work together.

RUSSIA/AFGHAN

Following the hasty exit of American and other NATO troops from Afghanistan, Russia has raised an alarm that the situation in the South Asian country could swiftly deteriorate.

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, raised the alarm during a visit to Laos, announcing Russia’s readiness to use its military base in Tajikistan to ensure the security of its allies in the Asian region.

Lavrov, who asserted that the American and NATO troops have been unable to achieve visible results in stabilizing the situation during the decades spent at the Afghan border, assured of his commitment to defend its regional allies if necessary to prevent any aggressive impulses.

Report indicated that the Islamist militia group known as the Taliban had captured more territory in Afghanistan in recent days from fleeing Afghan forces, as NATO troops continue to pull out of the country.

IRAN/U.S

Iran has begun the process of producing enriched uranium metal, a move that could help the Middle East nation develop a nuclear weapon.

The United Nations atomic watchdog named International Atomic Energy Agency, Iaea, made the disclosure to newsmen, noting that Iran informed the agency that uranium oxide, Uo2, would be shipped to a fuel fabrication plant to develop fuel for a research reactor.

Iran’s envoy to the IAEA, Kazem Gharibabadi, confirmed the development, saying the first silicide fuel plate will be produced soon using 20 percent enriched uranium for medical purposes.

Gharibabadi pointed out that the move will significantly improve the quality and quantity of radiopharmaceuticals and will turn the Islamic republic into one of the advanced countries in nuclear technology.

IRAN/REACTIONS

Members of the international community have expressed displeasure with Iran’s decision to commence the process of producing enriched uranium metal.

In various statements released to reporters, United States and European officials warned that Iran’s decision would complicate and potentially destroy ongoing talks to bring U.S and Tehran nations back into compliance with the 2015 deal.

The officials maintained that Iran has no credible civilian need for uranium metal and production, which are key steps in the development of a nuclear weapon, demanding that Iran abandons its nuclear Programs.

Information has it that the nuclear deal imposed curbs on Iran’s nuclear programme to make it harder for Tehran to develop fissile material for nuclear weapons in return for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Haiti/president

The president of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, is dead.

The country’s Interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph, made the announcement to newsmen, saying mouse was assassinated overnight in his private residence in Port-au-Prince. 

Confirming the development in a statement, the president’s residence revealed that the attack occurred around 1 a.m. and that the first lady was also wounded in the attack. 

This comes bare days after the late president appointed Ariel Henry as the new Prime Minister to form a consensus government that integrates different political sectors in the country and to well resolve the heavy political crisis bedeviling the nation since mid-2018.

SPORTS

Italy has become the first country to qualify for finals of the ongoing European championships dubbed Euro 2020.

This comes after the Italian team beat Spain 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a magnificent euro 2020 semi-final at Wembley, as Jorginho converted the decisive kick to take the Azzurri through to the final of a tournament in which they have been the outstanding side.

Reacting, Italy’s Manager, Roberto Mancini, thanked the players, who are now unbeaten in 33 games, urging them to do all within their powers to clinch the cup.

In the meantime, Denmark will have to do what no team has done against England at the Euro 2020 to reach the tournament final, which is to score a goal, as both sides face each other tonight in a second last-four tie.
