NIGERIA/ BREAK UP

Jigawa state former governor, alhaji sule lamido has stated that nigeria cannot break up because the elites are united in preserving their advantages over the masses irrespective of any difference.

The former governor made this known while addressing a youth gathering who converged in their hundreds, calling on him to vie for the 2023 presidency on the occasion of his 73rd birthday, adding that nigeria is too weak to break.

Alhaji lamido who explained that nigeria was facing difficulties due to leadership problem, injustice, insecurity, collapse of government institutions and denial of people’s rights and privileges noted that elites would never allow nigeria to break because of their selfish interest.

CHINA/US

China and the united states have failed to reach an agreement on climate change, with beijing rejecting calls to make more public pledges on climate change.

Report says the collapse of talks came at a critical time when the world’s two largest economies were grappling with the deadly consequences of climate change, including the recent deadly flooding in new york, and the torrential rain that hit several chinese cities in july and august, killing hundreds of people.

It would be noted that us special presidential envoy, john kerry left the chinese city of tianjin on september 3, without getting a firm commitment from beijing, though china’s environment ministry had said that the dialogue was candid, in-depth and pragmatic, promising that discussions will continue.

Reacting, chinese foreign minister, wang yi,who stated that cooperation on global warming could not be disentangled from broader diplomacy between the two countries added that the ball is now in the us’ court, charging the us to stop seeing china as a threat and opponent.

NCDC/COVID

The nigeria center for disease control, ncdc has announced 444 cases of coronavirus in 20 states and the federal capital territory, abuja.

Ncdc, while giving update on its verified facebook page on september 4, stated that 7 patients died due to complications from the dreaded virus.

The health agency further gave details of the affected states, noting that edo state recorded 71 cases followed by akwa-ibom 49, kwara and oyo had 49 each, kaduna 21, ekiti 20fct 19, anambra 17, delta 16, kano 16, bauchi 14, ogun 11, bayelsa 9, benue 9, cross river 7, nasarawa 5, jigawa and zamfara had 2 each and enugu 1.

The agency therefore noted that so far, nigeria had recorded 194,088 cases of the disease since its outbreak in 2020 while 433 patients had been treated, recovered and discharged with a total of 2,494 death recorded.

KATSINA/INSECURITY

Katsina state government has issued a directive to all commercial vehicle owners in the state due to the threat of insecurity across the country.

Director-general, media and publicity to governor aminu masari, abdu labaran, who gave the directives during an interview with newsmen on september 3 explained that all commercial vehicles in the state will henceforth bear the same colour.

Labaran stated that the new law which will start working from september 15, 2021, was part of the measures taken to beef up security in order to curb crime and criminalities in the state.

It would be recalled that the governor earlier signed into law, security order in some local government areas due to the insecurity issues being witnessed in the areas.

SOUTH AFRICA/ ELECTION

South africa’s top court has dismissed an application by the electoral commission to postpone the local elections due to hold on october 27.

In its ruling, the court set aside the government’s decision to have elections on october 27, saying instead the polls must go ahead between that date and november 1.

Report says, the judgement was a blow to the ruling african national congress, anc, which supported a postponement and had struggled to register thousands of councillors expected to contest the municipal elections, though anc spokesman, pule mabe, told repoters that the party welcomed the judgement and would study it properly before commenting further.

While reacting, south africa’s electoral commission stated that it would meet over the weekend to chart a way forward and would make an announcement about the electoral programme on september 6.

NEW ZEALAND/ATTACK

New zealand prime minister jacinda ardern has promised to tighten counterterrorism laws after a knife-wielding man known to the authorities stabbed and wounded seven people in a supermarket.

Ardern, while speaking at a news conference said the man was inspired by the armed group, isil and was being monitored constantly but could not be kept in prison by law any longer, promising passage of the law as soon as parliament resumes by the end of this month.

Reacting, new zealand supermarket group countdown general manager for safety, kiri hannifin, said knives and scissors had been removed from their shelves for safety reasons.

US/AID

The united states congress have been expected to finance the united nations’ humanitarian work in afghanistan.

Us congressional aides made this known while speaking with newsmen, saying lawmakers were nearly certain to provide humanitarian aid for internally displaced afghans and refugees, but not to the government itself.

It would be noted that even before the taliban victory, afghanistan was heavily aid dependent with 40 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, gdp drawn from foreign funding.

Meanwhile, the united nations had warned that 18 million afghans are facing a humanitarian disaster and another 18 million could quickly join them.

THAI/PM

Thailand’s prime minister prayuth chan-ocha and 5 cabinet ministers have comfortably survived a vote of no confidence in parliament as activists plan more protests against the government.

It was reported that prayuth received 264 votes in favour and 208 against on september 3 as well as health minister anutin charnvirakul and 4 other cabinet ministers also surviving the censure motion in a similar fashion.

It would be recalled that lawmakers had accused his government of mishandling the corona virus pandemic and criticising him for the severe economic impact, taking aim at the government’s slow vaccine rollout as a result of not making advance vaccine orders.

It should be noted that this would be the third censure motion the government had survived and comes as pro-democracy protesters plan more demonstrations today, september 4.Edit
