HERE ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS

Fg/trafficking day

As the world marks 2021 international day against trafficking in persons, the federal government has pledged to do all within its power to end the trafficking of young vulnerable nigerians.

Minister of interior, rauf aregbesola made the pledge at an event held at the british high commission to commemorate the 2021 international day against trafficking in persons.

Aregbesola, represented by the permanent secretary in the ministry, shuaib belgore described trafficking in persons as modern-day slavery, stating that the government would strive to root out trafficking of nigerians lured by criminal elements to europe for sex slavery and other illicit activities.

The minister also commended the british government and the iom for the support and collaborations in combating the menace of trafficking in persons over the years.

The theme for the this year’s trafficking day is: victims voices lead the way, a theme coined to highlight the importance of victims’ experiences in combating trafficking.

Fg/ammunition deal

The federal government has denied being aware of 875 million dollars ammunition deal with the united states which is being purportedly blocked by some lawmakers in the us.

Minister of information and culture, alhaji lai mohammed made the denial during an interview with newsmen in abuja, describing the purported ammunition deal reported in some sections of the media as fake news.

Mohammed said there was no contract of such nature and sum between the federal republic of nigeria and the united states of america except for the 12 super tucano attack helicopters of which six had been delivered.

The minister however noted that the relationship between nigeria and the us is smooth and waxing stronger while he announced that 6 of the tucano helicopter would be launched on august 3, this year.

Apc/congresses

The caretaker/extraordinary national convention planning committee of the all progressives congress, apc has threatened to sanction members who conduct parallel congresses.

Apc national secretary, senator john akpanudoedehe gave the threat in a notice to all members ahead of saturday’s ward congresses, warning  that the party would bring the full weight of its constitution on any member or group who organises any purported parallel congress, parallel party organ or parallel party office,

Akpanudoedehe who reminded all party members and stakeholders of the national executive council resolution of december 8, 2020, therefore noted that the resolution still exists and extends to the conduct of party members during the congresses.

Huriwa/ipob

The human rights writers association of nigeria, huriwa has asked the department of state services, dss to be law-abiding and honour its obligations to the constitution by allowing the leader of the indigenous people of biafra, ipob nnamdi kanu unfettered access to his lawyers.

Huriwa, in a statement issued by its national coordinator, comrade emmanuel onwubiko and the national media director, zainab yusuf said the continuous disrespect to the judicial powers of the federation domiciled in the court of law by the constitution being flouted serially by the dss is a signal that nigeria has become lawless.

It added that anarchy has increasingly set in, thereby undermining the essence of constitutional democracy.

The association therefore urged the hierarchy of the dss to stop operating like a lawless contraption and permit the ipob leader an access to his lawyers and doctors.

Nhrc/justice

In a bid to achieve sustainable peace in conflict-affected areas in nigeria, the executive secretary of the national human rights commission, nhrc tony ojukwu is hoping to integrate the formal and traditional justice systems in the country.

Ojukwu made the expression during a stakeholders consultative meeting on promoting reconciliation, reintegration and transitional justice in borno, adamawa and yobe states.

He stated that the northeastern states have been hotbeds of insurgency in the last ten years,  hence the need to make the move in helping to achieve sustainable peace in the region through intergation of formal justice system in nigeria.

On entertainment

Nigerian actor and writer, williams uchemba, has taken to his instagram page to pour accolades on his wife and other good wives out there.

In his post, uchemba pointed out that his wife, brunella oscar, who graduated from hull york medical school, put her medical profession on hold to help him build his goals and dreams.

The duo, who got engaged in october 2020, eventually tied the knot in a very colourful wedding ceremony in november that same year

The movie star added that although being a wife is tasking enough, she handles most of his businesses in a way that amazes him and he thanked her for it.

This act indeed summarizes the thought-line “what we do for love”.

On sport

The athletics federation of nigeria, afn, has taken full responsibility for the disqualification of the 10 team nigeria athletes from the ongoing 2020 tokyo olympics.

In a statement issued, afn president, tonobok okowa noted that the federation has taken proactive steps to avoid future occurrences by appointing prof. Ken anugweje as the head of the medical and anti-doping commission of the federation in a quest to put in place appropriate measures to comply with rule 15 of the anti-doping rules of world athletics

Also, the federal ministry of youth and sports development regretted the unfortunate development of 10 nigerian track and field athletes not meeting the testing conditions of the athletics integrity unit.

The ministry and afn however appealed to all athletes in the games village to remain focused on making their motherland proud.
