REPS/ELECTORAL ACT

The house of representatives has passed the electoral amendment bill despite opposition lawmakers’ decision to walk out of the chambers over their differing views.

The lower chamber’s passage of the bill showed that the house officially stepped down the controversial section 52 sub-section 3 of the bill, which deals with the electronic transmission of election results.

However, the opposition lawmakers, who walked out of the heated session at the national assembly chambers in Abuja, threatened to disrupt the proceedings when the house resumes from break.

The new amendment provides that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, may consider electronic transmission so far as the national network coverage is adjudged to be adequate and secure by Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC, and approved by the national assembly.

BUHARI/INFRASTRUCTURE

State governments have been tasked to build stronger partnerships with federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, in order to provide infrastructure that will meet the growing needs of Nigerians.

President Muhammadu Buhari gave the charge while inaugurating the Zobe regional water supply scheme in Dustin-ma, Katsina state, urging the national assembly to pass the national water resources bill.

President Buhari explained that the water project, which was initiated by a previous administration in 1992, was completed through collaboration between the federal government and the state government.

He, therefore, enjoined other sectors to emulate such partnerships between the federal and state governments so as to accelerate infrastructure development, assuring that his administration would work towards ensuring that all Nigerians have access to adequate potable water supply and sanitation facilities.

NBC/MEDIA HOUSE ORDER

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has ordered television and radio stations in Nigeria to desist from revealing detailed activities of bandits, terrorists and kidnappers in their reports.

The NBC director of broadcast monitoring, Francisca Aiyetan, revealed this in a statement titled “reviews and current affairs programmes: a need for caution”.

The commission said too many details may have an adverse implication on the efforts of security officials to tackle insurgency, stressing the need for media houses to take caution while bringing information on security to the doorsteps of Nigerians

It also enjoined broadcasters to work with the government in dealing with the security challenges by not glamourizing the notorious activities of insurgents, terrorists, kidnappers, and bandits.

ONDO/SLAIN JOURNALIST

The Ondo state police command has directed all its personnel to do all within their powers to apprehend perpetrators of the deadly bank robbery in Ilara Mokin, Ifedore local government area of the state.

The command’s public relations officer, Tee-leo Ikoro, made this known while fielding questions from reporters on the incident.

Ikoro who confirmed that a popular journalist, a motocyclist and a passers-by were killed in the robbery incident, emphasized that a team of policemen have been deployed to the scene and investigation is ongoing.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had earlier described gruesome murder of the Journalist, Olubunmi Afuye, popularly known as ‘Bumbam’ as a dastardly act, directing that perpetrators of the heinous crime must be apprehended and brought to book in the shortest possible time.

DPR/SALLAH

The Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, has assured Nigerians of petroleum products availability during the Sallah holidays.

Head of public affairs in DPR, Paul Osu, gave the assurance in a statement made available to the press in Lagos.

Osu, who restated that petroleum product remains sufficienct nation-wide, therefore advised marketers against hoarding and creating artificial scarcity under any guise.

He added that the agency would intensify monitoring and surveillance of all petroleum products outlets to ensure compliance with quality, quantity, integrity and safety of operations in line with its regulatory mandate.

ENTERTAINMENT

Big Brother Naija, Bbnaija winner, Olamilekan Agbeleshe, popularly known as Laycon, has slammed those pretending to be members of his fan base and family but are only stabbing him in the back.

In a post via his verified Instagram account, the reality TV star noted that he will continue to win and break records whether haters like it or not.

He pointed out to those slandering his name that bringing other people down will not make one rise as god has different plans for everyone.

SPORTS

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has released a 26-woman list for camping in Austria ahead of a tournament in Lagos, Nigeria.

The squad contains the surprise inclusion of the team’s former captain, desire Oparanozie who has not played for the falcons in two years.

Speaking with newsmen, Oparanozie commended the NFF for her inclusion in the squad, promising to bring ideas that will help the team in the competition.

Meanwhile, the super Falcons captain, Asisat Oshoala, is missing from the squad as she is resting and recovering from an injury after a hectic season with Bacelona’s women side.
