NASS/ELECTORAL ACT

THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY HAS TRANSMITTED THE REWORKED ELECTORAL ACT BILL TO PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI FOR ASSENT.

REVEALING THIS VIA A STATEMENT HE PERSONALLY SIGNED AFTER THE TRANSMISSION, SENIOR SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO PRESIDENT BUHARI ON NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MATTERS, SEN. BABAJIDE OMOWORARE SAID THE CLERK TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, OLATUNDE AMOS OJO TRANSMITTED THE AUTHENTICATED COPIES OF THE ELECTORAL BILL 2022 TO THE PRESIDENT ON JANUARY 31, 2022.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT PRESIDENT BUAHRI  HAD WITHHELD ASSENT TO THE ELECTORAL BILL 2021 TRANSMITTED TO HIM ON  NOVEMBER 19, 2021 BUT IT WAS REWORKED BY THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND BOTH THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PASSED THE SAME ON  JANUARY 25, 2022.

SENATE/AGENCIES

THE SENATE PRESIDENT, DR. AHMAD LAWAN HAS TASKED ALL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REVENUE AGENCIES TO GENERATE 3 TRILLION NAIRA FOR 2022.

WHILE DELIVERING HIS ADDRESS TO DECLARE OPEN AN INTERACTIVE SESSION ON THE NEED TO IMPROVE INTERNALLY GENERATED REVENUE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND REVENUE PROJECTIONS OF THE AGENCIES AS CONTAINED IN THE APPROPRIATION ACT 2022, DR. LAWAN SAID REVENUE AGENCIES OF GOVERNMENT ARE CAPABLE OF GENERATING THE AMOUNT ANNUALLY TO FUND THE BUDGET IF WASTAGE GOING ON IN MINISTRIES, DEPARTMENTS AGENCIES, MDAs ARE CURTAILED AND LEAKAGES BLOCKED.

HE FURTHER EXPRESSED OPTIMISM THAT IF WASTE WAS CURTAILED WITH MORE FUNDS COMING INTO THE COFFERS OF THE GOVERNMENT, IT WOULD LESSEN THE LEVEL OF EXTERNAL BORROWINGS.

THE SENATE PRESIDENT WHO POINTED OUT THAT ONE OF THE REASONS FOR THE MEETING WITH HEADS OF MDAs WAS TO SHORE UP REVENUE OF THE NATION THEREFORE SAID THE UPPER LEGISLATIVE CHAMBER WOULD BE STRICT IN OVER SIGHTING REVENUE AGENCIES IN 2022 AS GOVERNMENT COULD NOT AFFORD TO RUN ON DEFICIT.

UNIMED/PRESS CONFERENCE

THE UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, UNIMED, ONDO CITY HAS ORGANISED A PRESS CONFERENCE IN RESPECT OF THE COMBINED 2ND AND 3RD CONVOCATION CEREMONY BY THE VICE CHANCELLOR, PROF. ADESEGUN FATUSI WITH SOME ACADEMICIAN AND MEMBERS IN COUNCIL.

OAU/ASUU STRIKE

MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES, ASUU, OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, OAU CHAPTER, ILE-IFE HAVE COMMENCED AN INDEFINITE STRIKE OVER WHAT THEY DESCRIBED AS THE REFUSAL OF THE INSTITUTION’S MANAGEMENT TO PAY THEIR EARNED ACADEMIC ALLOWANCE.

CONFIRMING THE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH A PHONE CONVERSATION WITH NEWSMEN, THE CHAIRPERSON OF ASUU ON THE CAMPUS, ADEOLA EGBEDOKUN SAID THE STRIKE IS TOTAL AND COMPREHENSIVE,  ADDING THAT THE UNION TOOK THE DECISION AT AN EMERGENCY CONGRESS WHICH WAS HELD IN ONE OF THE UNIVERSITY HALL.

MEANWHILE, THE UNION HAD ACCUSED THE EYITOPE OGUNBODEDE-LED MANAGEMENT OF UNNECESSARILY DELAYING THE PAYMENT OF THE ALLOWANCE WHICH THEY CLAIMED HAD SINCE BEEN REMITTED INTO THE UNIVERSITY’S ACCOUNT BY THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT SINCE DECEMBER 13, 2021.

HOWEVER REACTING, THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT WHICH HAD EARLIER DESCRIBED THE STRIKE THREAT ISSUED BY THE UNION AS A FAMILY AFFAIR SAID IT IS STILL WATCHING THE EVENTS AS THEY UNFOLD BEFORE TAKING THE NEXT STEP.

KANO/EX-COMMISSIONER

FORMER KANO STATE COMMISSIONER FOR WORKS AND INFRASTRUCTURE, MU’AZU MAGAJI HAS BEEN REMANDED IN A CORRECTIONAL CENTRE IN THE STATE.

REPORTS REVEALED THAT MAGAJI WAS ARRESTED IN ABUJA SHORTLY AFTER GRANTING A LIVE TELEVISION INTERVIEW WHERE HE CRITICIZED THE PRESENT ADMINISTRATION OF GOVERNOR ABDULLAHI GANDUJE.

IT WAS FURTHER GATHERED THAT THE FORMER COMMISSIONER IS FACING A FOUR-COUNT CHARGE, BORDERING ON DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER, INTENTIONAL INSULT, INJURIOUS FALSEHOOD AND INCITING DISTURBANCE AGAINST THE STATE GOVERNOR.

A JOS HIGH COURT HAS COMMENCED HEARING ON THE SUIT SEEKING TO NULLIFY THE PURPORTED IMPEACHMENT OF ABOK AYUBA AS THE SPEAKER OF THE PLATEAU STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY.

THE SUIT, FILED BY A MEMBER REPRESENTING JOS SOUTH CONSTITUENCY, GWOTTSON FOM AND MEMBER REPRESENTING LANGTANG CENTRAL, TYEM JONGFA CHALLENGED THE IMPEACHMENT OF ABOK, DESCRIBING IT AS ILLEGAL.

IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE CASE WHICH CAME UP FOR HEARING ON JANUARY 31, 2022 ALSO JOINED CLERK OF THE HOUSE, LONGBAB WUYEP, PLATEAU STATE GOVERNMENT, NIGERIA POLICE FORCE, NPF, NIGERIA SECURITY AND CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS, NSCDC AND 10 OTHERS IN THE SUIT.

MEANWHILE, COUNSEL TO THE NPF, TALI APPEALED TO THE COURT FOR TIME TO ENABLE THE POLICE RESPOND TO THE CLAIMS.

DELIVERING HIS JUDGEMENT, JUSTICE ABUBAKAR MUSA THEREFORE ADJOURNED THE CASE TO MARCH 15, 2022 FOR HEARING SINCE THE LEAD COUNSEL TO THE CLAIMANTS, EDWARD PWAJOK, SAN AGREED AND DID NOT OPPOSE THE APPLICATION FOR AN EXTENSION OF TIME.

ON FOREIGN SCENE

CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER, JUSTIN TRUDEAU HAS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19.

IN A STATEMENT HE PERSONALLY POSTED ON HIS OFFICIAL TWITTER HANDLE, TRUDEAU WHO HAD PROMISED THAT HE WOULD INFORM CANADIANS IF HE EVER TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE VIRUS, SAID ON JANUARY 27, 2022 HE WAS ISOLATED AFTER BEING NOTIFIED OF AN EXPOSURE.

THE PM WHO RECALLED THAT HE WAS FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19 AND RECEIVED HIS BOOSTER DOSE ON JANUARY 4, 2022 REVEALED THAT ONE OF HIS CHILDREN HAD ALSO TESTED POSITIVE TO THE VIRUS.

HE ADDED THAT HE IS FEELING FINE BUT WOULD CONTINUE WORKING REMOTELY FOR THE WEEK.

MEANWHILE, REPORT SAYS WIFE OF THE CANADIAN P.M, SOPHIE TRUDEAU HAD TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 IN THE EARLY DAYS OF THE PANDEMIC AS IT WAS GATHERED THAT SHE CONTRACTED IT AFTER RETURNING FROM A UNITED KINGDOM TRIP.
