THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON REVIEW OF THE 1999 CONSTITUTION HAS PRESENTED THE FIRST BATCH OF ITS REPORT.

THE COMMITTEE, CHAIRED BY DEPUTY SPEAKER, IDRIS WASE PRESENTED THE 68 ALTERATIONS TO THE GREEN CHAMBER IN THE PRESENT OF THE FIRST LADY, AISHA BUHARI WHO WAS ON THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE ALONGSIDE THE MINISTER OF WOMEN AFFAIRS, PAULINE TALLEN TO WITNESS THE PRESENTATION.

IT WAS GATHERED THAT THE GENDER-RELATED BILLS ARE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE ONGOING CONSTITUTION REVIEW EXERCISE AND THE CREATION OF EXTRA-SEATS, AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AND CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTHS ARE SOME OF THE GENDER-RELATED BILLS.

MEANWHILE, REPORT SAYS ASIDE FROM THE FIRST LADY, SOME WOMEN GROUPS ALSO ASSEMBLED AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY WITH PLACARDS CALLING FOR MORE EQUALITY FOR WOMEN.

INEC/ELECTION RIGGING

THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION, INEC HAS DECLARED THAT THE ERA OF ELECTION RIGGING IS OVER AND THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE WILL COUNT IN THE JUNE 18 EKITI STATE GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION.

INEC RESIDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER, REC IN THE STATE, DR. ADENIRAN TELLA MADE THE DECLARATION DURING A COURTESY CALL ON THE OFFICE OF THE STATE COUNCIL OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS, NUJ IN ADO EKITI, THE STATE CAPITAL.

TELLA NOTED THAT TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCED TOOLS HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED TO ENSURE THAT THE ELECTORATES ELECT THE CANDIDATE OF THEIR CHOICE IN ORDER TO STEM ELECTORAL VICES.

HE ADDED THAT THE COMMISSION HAVE PUT IN PLACE MECHANISM WHERE THE VICES COULD BE CONTAINED, WHICH IN-TURN WOULD RESTORE SANITY TO THE ELECTORAL PROCESS.

THE INEC REC WHO FURTHER REVEALED THAT THE ELECTORAL BODY HAVE CREATED ADDITIONAL POLLING UNITS TO ENSURE THAT EVERY ELIGIBLE CITIZEN OF THE STATE PARTICIPATE IN THE PROCESS THEREFORE ASSURED THAT THE JUNE 18 GUBER POLL  WOULD BE CREDIBLE AND TRANSPARENT.

IMO/DECAMPING

IMO STATE’S IMMEDIATE PAST COMMISSIONER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, FABIAN IHEKWEME HAS DEFECTED TO THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY, PDP.

IHEKWEME DEFECTED FROM THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS, APC TO THE OPPOSTION PARTY ALONGSIDE SOME MEMBERS OF THE RULING PARTY ON FEBRUARY 23, 2022 AND WERE RECEIVED AT THE KANU NWANKWO STADIUM IN OWERRI, THE STATE CAPITAL BY THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN OF THE PARTY, IYORCHIA AYU AND THE NATIONAL SECRETARY, SEN. SAMDADDY ANYANWU.

ALSO RECEIVED OFFICIALLY TO THE PDP WAS ANOTHER TOP STAKEHOLDER AND A FORMER CHAIRMAN OF THE PDP IN THE STATE, CHARLES EZEKWEM.

FG/SCHOOL FEEDING

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS INCREASED ITS NATIONAL HOME-GROWN SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME OF 70 NAIRA PER DAY SCHOOL FEEDING OF A CHILD IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL TO 100 NAIRA.

THE NATIONAL COORDINATOR, NATIONAL SOCIAL INVESTMENTS PROGRAMME, NSIP, DR. UMAR BINDIR DISCLOSED THIS AT A TWO-DAY NATIONAL CONSULTATIVE MEETING ON PUBLIC FOOD PROCUREMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF NIGERIA’S NATIONAL HOME-GROWN SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME IN ABUJA.

BINDIR NOTED THAT THE PROGRAMME IS UNDER THE MINISTRY OF HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS, DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, ADDING THAT WHEN THEY STARTED IN 2016 BEFORE COVID-19, THEY EXPERIENCED WITH DIFFICULTY TO IMPLEMENT THE 70 NAIRA PER CHILD.

THE NSIP NATIONAL COORDINATORWHO STATED THAT PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI GRACIOUSLY APPROVED THE FEEDING TO 100 NAIRA AFTER THE HONOURABLE MINISTER, SADIYA FAROUQ PASSIONATELY MADE SUBMISSION OF THEIR PRESENTATION TO THE PRESIDENT ADDED THAT THE MINISTER OF FINANCE, ZAINAB AHMED IS GIVING A VERY GOOD COOPERATION TO ENSURE THAT THE NEW AMOUNT IS IMPLEMENTED ON TIME.

HURIWA/FCT FIRE

THE HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA, HURIWA HAS DESCRIBED THE FIRE THAT GUTTED PARTS OF THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF FINANCE AS GOVERNMENT MAGIC WHICH MAY BE A SINISTER ATTEMPT TO CONCEAL SOME SECRETS REGARDING MASSIVE LOOTING OF PUBLIC FUND.

IT WAS GATHERED THAT AT THE EARLY HOURS OF FEBRUARY 23, FIRE GUTTED A BUILDING AT THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF FINANCE LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT, ABUJA AS BLACK SMOKE WAS SEEN BILLOWING FROM PART OF THE BUILDING.

REACTING TO THE FIRE OUTBREAK IN A STATEMENT BY ITS NATIONAL COORDINATOR, COMR. EMMANUEL ONWUBIKO, HURIWA SAID IT IS UNIMAGINABLE THAT SUCH A STRATEGIC MINISTRY, HOUSING SENSITIVE FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONAL DOCUMENTS COULD BE SO CRIMINALLY SET ABLAZE.

WHILE NOTING THAT WITH JUST FEW MONTHS TO EXPECT HANDING OVER TO ANOTHER ELECTED FEDERAL ADMINISTRATION, THE RIGHTS GROUP STATED THAT IT IS EXPECTED THAT MORE DELIBERATE INFERNOS MIGHT OCCUR SO AS TO HIDE EVIDENCE TO TRACE ANY FINANCIAL MALFEASANCE BEING COMMITTED NOW, CALLING FOR VIGILANCE BY NIGERIANS AS IT ALLEGED THAT THE HEADS OF SECURITY AGENCIES MIGHT HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED.

THE NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT HAS SOLICITED THE SUPPORT OF THE NIGERIA IMMIGRATION SERVICE, NIS TO HELP MONITOR AND CHECK THE INFLUX OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS INTO THE STATE.

SECRETARY TO THE STATE GOVERNMENT, SSG, AHMED MATANE MADE THE REQUEST DURING A VISIT BY THE NEW COMPTROLLER OF THE NIS, NIGER STATE COMMAND, NONGO SHIMA TO HIS OFFICE, DEMANDING THE SERVICE TO FISH OUT ILLEGAL AND CRIMINAL IMMIGRANTS.

WHILE EXPLAINING THAT THE NEFARIOUS ACTIVITIES OF THE CRIMINAL IMMIGRANTS HAVE BECOME INIMICAL TO THE STATE, MATANE EXPRESSED READINESS OF THE STATE TO PARTNER WITH THE SERVICE IN TACKLING THE INCESSANT SECURITY CHALLENGES IN SOME PARTS OF THE STATE.

THE SSG FURTHER ASSURED THE NEW IMMIGRATION COMPTROLLER THAT GOVERNMENT WOULD CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE IMMIGRATION SERVICE IN THE STATE WITH A VIEW TO SUCCEED IN CARRYING OUT ITS MANDATE.

 

COURT/EX GOVERNOR

THE FEDERAL HIGH COURT SITTING IN ABUJA HAS ISSUED AN INTERIM ORDER FORFEITING 10 PROPERTIES OF FORMER ZAMFARA STATE GOVERNOR, ABDULAZIZ YARI TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

JUSTICE OBIORA EGWUATU GAVE THE ORDER FOLLOWING AN EX-PARTE MOTION MOVED BY COUNSEL FOR THE INDEPENDENT CORRUPT PRACTICES AND OTHER RELATED OFFENCES COMMISSION, ICPC, OSUOBENI AKPONIMISINGHA.

IT WAS REPORTED THAT THE FORFEITURE IS COMING A YEAR AFTER ANOTHER FEDERAL HIGH COURT ORDERED THE FINAL FORFEITURE OF 278.9 MILLION NAIRA, INCLUDING DOLLARS TRACED TO THE FORMER GOVERNOR.

MEANWHILE, JUSTICE EGWUATU HELD THAT AFTER CAREFULLY READING THROUGH THE ICPC’S MOTION, EXHIBITS ATTACHED AND BY THE RELEVANT SECTIONS OF THE MONEY LAUNDERING ACT, HE WAS INCLINED TO GRANT THE ORDER.

HE HOWEVER ADJOURNED THE MATTER UNTIL APRIL 28, 2022 TO HEAR THE MOTION FOR FINAL FORFEITURE.

ON FOREIGN SCENE

A DELEGATION OF SENIOR SUDANESE OFFICIALS, INCLUDING THE DEPUTY LEADER OF THE COUNTRY’S MILITARY-LED RULING BODY HAVE HEADED TO RUSSIA FOR TALKS ON COOPERATION.

SUDAN RULING SOVEREIGN COUNCIL WHICH WAS CHAIRED BY THE COUNTRY’S DE FACTO LEADER, ABDEL AL-BURHAN MADE THIS KNOWN IN A STATEMENT, SAYING THE DELEGATION, WHICH ALSO INCLUDES FINANCE MINISTER, GIBRIL IBRAHIM AS WELL AS SENIOR ENERGY AND TRADE OFFICIALS WOULD HOLD A SERIES OF TALKS WITH RUSSIAN COUNTERPARTS DURING THE VISIT.

THE COUNCIL FURTHER REVEALED THAT THE SUDANESE DELEGATION’S VISIT TO MOSCOW, RUSSIA CAPITAL FELL WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF EXCHANGING VIEWS AND DISCUSSING WAYS TO DEVELOP AND STRENGTHEN COOPERATION BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.
