OSUN/RETIREES

OSUN STATE GOVERNOR, GBOYEGA OYETOLA HAS APPROVED THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF 927 MILLION NAIRA TO PAY THE PENSION OF RETIREES IN THE STATE.

STATE HEAD OF SERVICE,  HOS, DR. FESTUS OYEBADE MADE THIS KNOWN IN A STATEMENT MADE AVAILABLE TO NEWSMEN IN OSOGBO, THE STATE CAPITAL, SAYING OUT OF THE 927 MILLION NAIRA,  877 MILLION NAIRA WOULD  BE USED FOR THE SETTLEMENT OF BONDS OF RETIRED PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS, LOCAL GOVERNMENT WORKERS AND RETIRED CIVIL SERVANTS WHO ARE UNDER THE CONTRIBUTORY PENSION SCHEME.

ACCORDING TO OYEBADE, THE NAMES OF THE RETIRED WORKERS SELECTED ON MERIT HAVE BEEN POSTED ON THE NOTICE OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT PENSIONS BUREAU, CIVIL SERVICE PENSIONS BUREAU, MINISTRY OF INFORMATION AND THE OFFICE OF THE HEAD OF SERVICE.

THE HOS THEREFORE REITERATED THE GOVERNMENT’S COMMITMENT TO THE WELFARE AND GENERAL WELL-BEING OF CITIZENS PARTICULARLY WORKERS IN THE STATE.

ONDO/EX-CONVICTS

THE NIGERIAN CORRECTIONAL SERVICE, NCS, ONDO DIVISION HAS REACTED TO THE STIGMATIZATION OF EX-CONVICT IN THE SOCIETY.

THE OFFICER IN CHARGE OF ONDO CORRECTIONAL CENTER, SEGEDE, CSC OGUNDARE RASHEED MADE THE REACTION DURING AN INTERVIEW WITH EKI FM’S CORRESPONDENTS, SAYING THE DISCRIMINATION OF AN  EX-CONVICT WHO HAS CHANGED FROM HIS CRIMES AND CONFORMS TO THE SOCIETAL NORMS AND VALUES COULD LEAD THEM BACK TO THE PRISON, HENCE, THE  NEED  TO END SOCIETAL STIGMATIZATION.

ALSO SPEAKING,  ANOTHER OFFICER OF THE CENTER, AKINDELE  SP WHO REVEALED CHALLENGES  BEING FACED BY CONVICTS SUCH AS SHORTAGE OF MATTRESSES AND INADEQUATE TOOLS TO ENHANCE THE CONVICTS WHO HAD LEARNT A TRADE AFTER BEING DISCHARGED  CALLED ON THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT TO IMPROVE THE CONVICTS WELFARISM AND CHARGED PEOPLE TO ALWAYS PREACH HOPE AND PEACE TO EX-CONVICTS.

THE OFFICERS THEREFORE STATED THAT AN INDIVIDUAL RELEASED FROM IMPRISONMENT MIGHT BE ELIGIBLE FOR SOCIAL SECURITY RETIREMENTS, SURVIVORS OR DISABILITY BENEFITS IF THEY HAD WORKED OR PAID INTO SOCIAL SECURITY ENOUGH YEARS.

EKITI/NEMA

EKITI STATE GOVERNMENT HAS ADVOCATED A STRONGER PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY, NEMA FOR ASSISTANCE TO DISASTER VICTIMS IN THE STATE.

STATE DEPUTY GOVERNOR, OTUNBA BISI EGBEYEMI DISCLOSED THIS WHEN HE RECEIVED THE NEW NEMA HEAD OF OPERATIONS FOR EKITI, ONDO AND OSUN STATES,  KADRI OLANREWAJU ON A FAMILIARISATION VISIT.

EXPRESSING DELIGHT WHILE WELCOMING OLANREWAJU TO THE STATE, EGBEYEMI NOTED THAT THE STATE GOVERNMENT WAS LOOKING FORWARD  TO  A  MORE ROBUST PARTNERSHIP WITH NEMA TO GIVE SUCCOUR TO VICTIMS OF NATURAL AND MAN-MADE DISASTERS IN THE STATE TO HELP THEM LIVE NORMAL LIVES.

RESPONDING, THE NEMA CHIEF SAID A SMOOTH RELATIONSHIP WITH THE STATE GOVERNMENT WAS VERY KEY IN ACHIEVING THE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE AGENCY IN MAKING LIFE EASIER FOR VICTIMS OF DISASTERS.

KOGI/WORKERS

PRIMARY HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN THE 21 LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS OF KOGI STATE WILL GO ON STRIKE IF THE STATE GOVERNMENT FAILS TO MEET THEIR DEMAND FOR IMPROVED SALARY.

THE STATE SECRETARY, MEDICAL AND HEALTH WORKERS UNION OF NIGERIA, COMR.  ROSE MOMOH STATED THIS IN A STATEMENT, EXPLAINING THAT THE PRIMARY HEALTH WORKERS IN THE SERVICE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS HAVE BEEN COLLECTING 30 TO 35 PERCENT SALARIES FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS WITHOUT AN END TO THE PROBLEM.

MOMOH WHO ADDED THAT IN JANUARY 2022, THE STATE GOVERNMENT PAID THEM 25 PERCENT DESCRIBED THE MOVE AS THE WORST, ADDING THAT THE HEALTH WORKERS RISK THEIR LIVES EVERY DAY TO SAVE OTHERS, YET THEIR SALARY IS NOTHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT.

WHILE INSISTING THAT THE HEALTH WORKERS COULD NO LONGER BEAR THE CONTINUOUS HARDSHIP THEY ARE FACING, THE UNION SECRETARY THEREFORE DEMANDED THAT PRIMARY HEALTH CARE WORKERS BE PAID 100 PERCENT LIKE THEIR STATE COUNTERPARTS.

SOUTH/AUTONOMY

LOCAL GOVERNMENT WORKERS HAVE CONTINUED THEIR ADVOCACY FOR FULL FINANCIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE AUTONOMY FOR THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT SYSTEM.

REPORT SAYS THE WORKERS FROM THE SOUTH SOUTH  REGION WHO STAGED A PROTEST IN PORT HARCOURT, THE RIVERS STATE CAPITAL ON MARCH 16 TO PRESS HOME THEIR DEMAND MARCHED FROM THE LABOUR HOUSE IN RIVERS STATE TO THE STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY TO SUBMIT THEIR PROTEST LETTER TO THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE.

SPEAKING,  THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES, NULGE, OLATUNJI AMBALI SAID EIGHTY PERCENT OF NIGERIA’S PROBLEMS WOULD HAVE BEEN SOLVED WITH THE APPROVAL OF FINANCIAL AUTONOMY FOR THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT SYSTEM.

IT WAS GATHERED THAT THE SPEAKER WAS NOT ON GROUND TO RECEIVE THE PROTESTING WORKERS BUT THE MEMBER REPRESENTING ONELGA CONSTITUENCY 1, CHRISTIAN AHIAKWO RECEIVED THE LETTER ON HIS BEHALF AND PRESENTING THE LETTER TO THE LAWMAKERS, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE RIVERS STATE COUNCIL OF THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS, BEATRICE ITUBO APPEALED TO THE LAWMAKERS TO VOTE YES WHEN THE BILL ARRIVES AT THE HOUSE.

NDC/NNPC

THE NIGER DELTA CONGRESS, NDC HAS EXPRESSED OUTRAGE OVER REVELATIONS OF GRAND THEFT MADE BY THE OFFICE OF THE AUDITOR-GENERAL OF THE FEDERATION AGAINST THE NIGERIAN NATIONAL PETROLEUM CORPORATION, NNPC.

IN A STATEMENT RELEASED TO NEWSMEN, NDC SPOKESMAN, OVUNDA ENI CITED THE 2019 AUDIT REPORT WHICH INDICTED THE CORPORATION AND THE MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM RESOURCES FOR MISSING 107 MILLION BARRELS OF CRUDE OIL.

ENI ACCUSED THE NNPC OF ENGAGING IN WHAT APPEARS TO BE AN OFFICIALLY SANCTIONED AND WELL ORGANISED LARCENY OF CRUDE ON A SCALE THAT ARTISANAL REFINERS AND THEIR COLLABORATORS ARE CURRENTLY INCAPABLE OF.

THE NDC SPOKESMAN HOWEVER STATED THAT THE CONGRESS WOULD LIKE TO STATE THAT THE ACTIONS OF THE NNPC UNDER MELE KYARI ARE UNACCEPTABLE TO THE NATIONALITIES OF THE NIGER DELTA WHO BEAR THE BRUNT AND CARRY THE WEIGHT OF NIGERIA’S POLITICAL ECONOMY, HENCE THE IMMEDIATE SACK AND PROSECUTION OF THE ENTIRE LEADERSHIP OF THE NNPC BY THE MINISTER OF PETROLEUM AND PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI.

ON FOREIGN SCENE

NIGERIANS TRAVELING TO THE UNITED KINGDOM WILL NO LONGER BE REQUIRED TO SHOW EVIDENCE OF COVID-19 TEST OR PROOF OF VACCINATION AS A PRE-CONDITION FOR ENTERING INTO THE COUNTRY.

THIS WAS REVEALED IN THE TRAVEL ABROAD GUIDE PUBLISHED ON THE UK GOVERNMENT WEBSITE, INDICATING THAT THE NEW RULE COMES INTO EFFECT FROM FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2022.

THE NEW GUIDELINE WHICH FURTHER STATED THAT THE DEVELOPMENT ALSO APPLY TO WHETHER ONE IS VACCINATED OR NOT HOWEVER READ THAT ANYONE WHO ARRIVES IN ENGLAND FROM ABROAD NEED TO FILL IN A UK PASSENGER LOCATOR FORM BEFORE TRAVELING.

MEANWHILE, THE SAME RULE ALSO APPLIES TO THOSE TRAVELING TO SCOTLAND, WALES AND NORTHERN IRELAND AS REVEALED IN LINE WITH THE CURRENT RULES.

EUROPE/RUSSIA

STILL ON FOREIGN SCENE,

THE  COUNCIL  OF  EUROPE  HAS EXPELLED RUSSIA WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT AFTER 26 YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP FOLLOWING UKRAINE INVASION.

IN A STATEMENT ISSUED, THE COMMITTEE OF MINISTERS OF THE COUNCIL TOOK THE DECISION IN A SPECIAL SESSION IN THE FRENCH CITY OF STRASBOURG AS THEY CONDEMNED THE RUSSIAN INVASION OF UKRAINE.

THE MINISTERS WHO VOTED UNANIMOUSLY FOR RUSSIA’S EXCLUSION SAID THEY WOULD CONTINUE TO STAND BY UKRAINE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE AGGRESSOR.

MEANWHILE, RUSSIA HAD ALREADY DECLARED ITS WITHDRAWAL FROM THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE AFTER IT HAD TAKEN STEPS TO EXCLUDE IT AS IT WAS GATHERED THAT TOGETHER WITH THE FORMAL NOTIFICATION OF THE WITHDRAWAL, THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE COUNCIL ALSO RECEIVED INFORMATION FROM THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION ABOUT ITS INTENTION TO DENOUNCE THE EUROPEAN CONVENTION ON HUMAN RIGHTS.
