UNICEF/GENITAL MUTILATION

THE UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN’S FUND, UNICEF HAS DISCLOSED THAT THERE IS AN INCREASE IN FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION ESPECIALLY AMONG GIRLS AGED BELOW 15 YEARS IN NIGERIA.

UNICEF’S REPRESENTATIVE IN NIGERIA, PETER HAWKINS DISCLOSED THIS IN A STATEMENT ISSUED TO NEWSMEN, NOTING THAT THE RATES HAVE RISEN FROM 16.9% IN 2013 TO 19.2% IN 2018.

ACCORDING TO HIM, FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION REMAINS WIDESPREAD IN NIGERIA, ADDING THAT WITH AN ESTIMATED 19.9 MILLION SURVIVORS, NIGERIA ACCOUNTS FOR THE THIRD-HIGHEST NUMBER OF WOMEN AND GIRLS WHO HAVE UNDERGONE IT WORLDWIDE.

HAWKINS WHO STATED THAT THOUGH THE NATIONAL PREVALENCE OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION AMONG WOMEN IN NIGERIA AGED 15-49 DROPPED FROM 25% IN 2013 TO 20% IN 2018 HOWEVER NOTED THAT FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION IS DEEPLY HARMFUL TO GIRLS AND WOMEN, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY, ADDING THAT IT IS A PRACTICE THAT HAS NO PLACE IN THE SOCIETY TODAY AND MUST BE ENDED.

THE MINISTER, REPRESENTED AT THE EVENT BY AN OFFICER AT THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL MOBILISATION, UNIVERSAL BASIC EDUCATION COMMISSION, HAJIYA SIDIKAT SHOMOPE SAID ALL CITIZENS ARE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE THEIR RELIGION ACCORDING TO THE DICTATES OF THEIR FAITH AS LONG AS NO HARM OR INCONVENIENCE IS CAUSED TO OTHER PEOPLE.

IN A STATEMENT MADE AVAILABLE TO NEWSMEN, FOMWAN NATIONAL PRESIDENT, HAJIA RAFI’AH SANNI WHO COMMISERATED WITH PARENTS AND THE FAMILY OF THE DECEASED TASKED THE KWARA STATE GOVERNMENT NOT TO ALLOW THE VIOLENCE DEGENERATE INTO A RELIGIOUS CRISIS.

REPORT SAYS HABEEB IDRIS WAS LAST WEEK KILLED DURING A PROTEST OVER THE USE OF HIJAB IN KWARA STATE.

A FORMER SENATOR REPRESENTING KADUNA CENTRAL, SHEHU SANI HAS REVEALED HOW THE AFRICAN UNION, AU CAN END COUPS IN THE CONTINENT.

MEANWHILE, THERE HAD BEEN A RISING SPATE OF COUPS IN AFRICA AS BURKINA-FASO, MALI AND GUINEA FELL VICTIMS TO COUPS, MAINLY ORCHESTRATED BY THEIR MILITARY PERSONNEL.

THE APEX COURT FIXED THE DATE AFTER TAKING ARGUMENTS FROM COUNSEL TO THE PARTIES AS JUSTICE OLUKAYODE ARIWOOLA WHO LED THE SUPREME COURT PANEL OF JUSTICES INFORMED THE SENIOR LAWYERS INVOLVED THAT THE COURT WOULD DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO ENSURE DELIVERY OF THE JUDGMENT ON THE APPOINTED DATE.

HOWEVER, RIVERS AND IMO HAVE SINCE LAST YEAR BEEN LOCKED IN A FIERCE LEGAL BATTLE ON THE DISPUTED 17 OIL WELLS LOCATED IN NDONI AND EGBEMA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS OF THE TWO STATES.
