FG/CHILD COURT

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS APPROVED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SPECIALIZED COURT FOR CHILD OFFENDERS.

ATTORNEY-GENERAL OF THE FEDERATION AND MINISTER OF JUSTICE, ABUBAKAR MALAMI REVEALED THIS KNOWN WHILE INAUGURATING THE JUSTICE FOR CHILDREN COORDINATION FORUM, AN EUROPEAN UNION IN CONJUNCTION WITH UNICEF PROGRAMME AIMED AT ENHANCING ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN ABUJA.

MALAMI EXPLAINED THAT HIS OFFICE HAD ALREADY ENGAGED RESPECTIVE HEADS OF COURTS TO ENSURE THAT THE SPECIALIZED COURTS WOULD ALSO GUARANTEE THE SPEEDY AND SEAMLESS TRIAL OF RAPE/GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE OFFENCES.

THE MINISTER FURTHER REVEALED THAT THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF JUSTICE HAS CONTINUED TO PARTNER WITH UNICEF AND OTHER DONOR AGENCIES AS WELL RESPECTIVE HEADS OF COURTS TO TRAIN JUDGES AND MAGISTRATES ON THE IMPLEMENTATION AND ENFORCEMENT OF THE CHILD RIGHTS ACT, ESPECIALLY ON THE EFFECTIVE USE OF FAMILY COURT RULES AND PROCEDURES.

DR OGUNDELE GAVE THE CHARGE WHILE SPEAKING WITH EKI FM, DESCRIBING THE THEME FOR THIS YEAR’S BREASTFEEDING WEEK WHICH IS PROTECT BREASTFEEDING, A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY AS A CALL EDUCATE  THE PUBLIC ON THEIR ROLE TO SUPPORT AND PROTECT BREASFEEDING MOTHERS.

GERMAN SPORTSWEAR COMPANY, PUMA HAS REVEALED READINESS TO SUE NIGERIA FOR BREACH OF CONTRACT.

THE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OF THE FACTIONAL ATHLETICS FEDERATION OF NIGERIA, AFN, SUNDAY ADELEYE, REVEALED THIS TO NEWSMEN, SAYING PUMA HAVE BEEN SENDING DOCUMENTS FROM THEIR LEGAL DEPARTMENT AND ARE PLANNING TO  EMBARK ON A LEGAL BATTLE SOON.

IT WOULD BE RECALLED THAT THE KIT MANUFACTURERS PUMA TERMINATED THE FOUR-YEAR SPONSORSHIP CONTRACT WORTH 1.67 MILLION DOLLARS WITH THE FEDERATION ON AUGUST 4, AFTER THE FAILURE OF NIGERIAN ATHLETES’ TO WEAR THEIR BRAND AT THE ONGOING TOKYO OLYMPICS.

UNICEF/BREASTFEEDING

THE UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN’S FUND, UNICEF, HAS URGED THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO INCENTIVIZE PRIVATE SECTOR TO AVAIL MOTHERS SIX MONTHS MATERNITY LEAVE TO ENSURE ADEQUATE BREASTFEEDING OF THEIR BABIES.

UNICEF CHIEF OF FIELD, DR. IBRAHIM CONTEH GAVE THE CHARGE IN HIS WELCOME REMARK AT THE ONE DAY ZONAL MEDIA DIALOGUE ON THE COMMEMORATION OF THE 2021 WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK IN ENUGU.

CONTEH STATED THAT THE INCENTIVES SHOULD BE PUT IN PLACE TO ENSURE THAT THE ABSENCE OF MOTHERS FROM THEIR DUTY POSTS WITHIN THE SAID PERIOD WOULD NOT NEGATIVELY IMPACT THE PROFIT MARGIN OF THE CONCERNED PRIVATE SECTOR ORGANIZATIONS.

THE UNICEF CHIEF ALSO CALLED ON THE GOVERNMENT TO SET UP REGULATIONS TO MAKE SURE THE PRIVATE SECTOR DOES NOT LOSS MUCH MONEY EITHER THROUGH TAXES OR SOME OTHER MEANS.

THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE, IGP USMAN BABA HAS STATED THAT THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE IS COMMITTED TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESSES IN NIGERIA.

THE IGP REVEALED THAT THERE ARE PLANS IN PLACE FOR EFFECTIVE UTILISATION OF THE POLICE LAWYERS AS WELL AS ADVANCING PROFESSIONALISM FOR LAWYERS WITHIN THE FORCE, PLEGDING THAT THE FORCE WOULD WORK HAND IN HAND WITH THE NBA IN A JOINT COMMITTEE WHICH WOULD SOON BE ESTABLISHED TO DEAL WITH ISSUES OF UNNECESSARY ANTAGONISM BETWEEN POLICE OFFICERS AND DEFENSE ATTORNEYS.

THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE SERVICES, DSS HAS DENIED ARRESTING AND DETAINING SOME NIGERIANS ON THE ORDERS OF SOME POWERFUL CITIZENS.

DSS SPOKESMAN, PETER AFUNANYA MADE THE DENIAL WHILE REACTING TO A COMMENT BY A FORMER MEDIA AIDE TO THE LATE PRESIDENT UMARU MUSA YAR’ADUA, OLUSEGUN ADENIYI, WHO SAID HUNDREDS OF INNOCENT CITIZENS ARE CURRENTLY LANGUISHING IN POLICE AND STATE SECURITY SERVICES DETENTION CENTRES FOLLOWING ARRESTS ORDERED BY POWERFUL MEN AND WOMEN IN THE COUNTRY.

REACTING, AFUNANYA SAID THE SECURITY AGENCY HAD BEEN FOLLOWING THE STANDARD OPERATION PROCEDURE ON THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ADMINISTRATION, HOWEVER, DEMANDED IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL OF THE STATEMENT MADE BY ADENIYI, NOTING THAT SECURITY AGENCIES DESERVED TO BE PRAISED, RESPECTED AND SUPPORTED BY THE CITIZENS.

WHILE CONGRATULATING THE SEVEN RETURNING COMMISSIONERS ON THEIR REAPPOINTMENT, OGUNDOYIN ADVISE THEM TO TAKE NOTE OF ALL THE QUESTIONS AND OBSERVATIONS MADE BY THE HONORABLE MEMBERS TOWARDS MOVING OYO STATE FORWARD.

IT WOULD BE RECALLED THAT GOVERNOR MAKINDE HAD IN JULY SACKED ALL HIS 17 COMMISSIONERS AFTER THEY HAD SPENT TWO YEARS IN OFFICE BUT FORWARDED NAMES OF SEVEN OF THE SACKED COMMISSIONERS TO THE ASSEMBLY THIS WEEK FOR RATIFICATION.

NO FEWER THAN FIVE ORO WORSHIPPERS HAVE BEEN ARRAIGNED FOR ALLEGEDLY ATTACKING SOME MUSLIMS IN OGUN STATE AFTER CLAIMING THAT THE MUSLIMS VIOLATED THEIR CURFEW.

OGUN STATE POLICE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER, ABIMBOLA OYEYEMI, CONFIRMED THIS WITH NEWSMEN, EXPLAINING THAT THE ORO WORSHIPPERS ATTACKED A MUSLIM CLERIC, BOLA WASIU IN IDIROKO AREA OF IPOKIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF THE STATE BY INFLICTING MATCHETTE CUTS ON HIS HEAD.

OYEYEMI WONDERED WHY A GROUP OF PEOPLE WOULD, ALL IN THE NAME OF ORO FESTIVAL, PREVENT MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIANS FROM SERVING THEIR GOD AND THE STOP PEOPLE FROM EMBARKING ON THEIR DAILY BUSINESS ACTIVITIES.

THE PPRO WHO SAID THE TRADITIONALISTS HAVE BEEN SEVERALLY INVITED TO ABEOKUTA, THE STATE CAPITAL FOR PEACE TALKS, HOWEVER STATED THAT THE ARRESTED WORSHIPPERS WOULD BE IN PRISON CUSTODY PENDING WHEN THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO PERFECT THEIR BAIL CONDITIONS.
