FG/FUEL SUBSIDY

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS STATED THAT THERE WILL NOT BE ANY REMOVAL OF FUEL SUBSIDY ANYTIME SOON AS A RESULT OF PERCEIVED DIFFICULTIES ASSOCIATED WITH IT.

MINISTER OF FINANCE, HAJIA ZAINAB AHMED STATED THIS AT AN INTERACTIVE MEETING WITH THE SENATE PRESIDENT, DR. AHMAD LAWAN AND OTHER PRINCIPAL OFFICERS OF THE SENATE, SAYING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WAS INITIALLY LOOKING AT THE REMOVAL OF FUEL SUBSIDY FROM JULY THIS YEAR, AFTER WHICH THEY MADE PROVISIONS IN THE 2022 BUDGET TO CUSHION THE EFFECT BUT NOTED THAT THE TIMING HAS BECOME A HUGE CHALLENGE.

THE FINANCE MINISTER WHOSE DISCLOSURE WAS AT THE BACKDROP OF CONCERNS RAISED BY THE SENATE PRESIDENT WHO POINTED OUT THAT THERE SHOULD BE CAUTION IN THE EVENT OF SUBSIDY REMOVAL SO AS NOT TO DEEPEN THE ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS OF NIGERIANS NOTED THAT HER MINISTRY CONSULTED WIDELY AND DISCOVERED THAT THE GOVERNMENT COULD NOT GO AHEAD WITH THE REMOVAL PLANS UNTIL SOME STEPS ARE TAKEN TO PROTECT THE INTEREST OF NIGERIANS.

SENATE/FUEL SUBSIDY

MEANWHILE,

THE SENATE PRESIDENT, DR. AHMAD LAWAN HAS URGED THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS, NLC AND THE TRADE UNION CONGRESS, TUC TO ABORT THE PLANNED PROTESTS AGAINST THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSED REMOVAL OF FUEL SUBSIDY.

DR. LAWAN GAVE THE CHARGE WHEN HE MET WITH THE MINISTER OF FINANCE, BUDGET AND NATIONAL PLANNING, ZAINAB AHMED AND THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PETROLEUM RESOURCES, TIMIPRE SYLVA OVER THE PLANNED REMOVAL OF SUBSIDY ON PETROLEUM PRODUCTS BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

DESCRIBING THE PLANNED NATIONWIDE PROTEST AS TOTALLY UNNECESSARY, LAWAN FAULTED THE TIMING FOR THE PLANNED REMOVAL OF SUBSIDY ON PETROLEUM PRODUCTS BUT NOTED THAT PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI-LED GOVERNMENT BELIEVES THAT SUFFICIENT PLANNING MUST BE CARRIED OUT BEFORE ITS EVENTUAL REMOVAL.

HE THEREFORE APPEALED TO THE TUC AND NLC TO SHELVE THEIR PLAN TO GO ON STRIKE OR DEMONSTRATION, ASSURING THAT THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE A REMOVAL OF SUBSIDY.

NORTH/PRESIDENCY

AN ELDER STATESMAN, TANKO YAKASAI HAS STATED THAT IT WILL BE UNJUST FOR NORTHERN NIGERIA TO STILL DEMAND THE PRESIDENCY IN 2023 IN SPITE OF THE AGITATIONS FOR POWER SHIFT TO THE SOUTH AT THE END OF PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI’S TENURE.

REPORTS SAID THERE HAD BEEN HEATED DEBATES AMONG STAKEHOLDERS IN THE NATION’S POLITY OVER POWER ROTATION BETWEEN THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH AHEAD OF THE 2023 GENERAL ELECTIONS AS SOME PROMINENT NORTHERNERS LIKE THE FORMER VICE PRESIDENT, ATIKU ABUBAKAR AND A FORMER SENATE PRESIDENT, BUKOLA SARAKI, AMONG OTHERS HAD SHOWN INTEREST IN THE 2023 PRESIDENCY.

HOWEVER REACTING TO THE DECLARATION OF INTEREST BY NORTHERNERS, YAKASAI SAID WHILE HE IS NOT A CARD-CARRYING MEMBER OF ANY POLITICAL PARTY, IT WOULD BE AN INJUSTICE TO THE SOUTH FOR NORTHERNERS TO ASPIRE FOR THE PRESIDENCY AFTER THE EXPIRATION OF THE TENURE OF PRESIDENT BUHARI IN 2023.

THE ELDER STATESMAN WHO NOTED THAT IT SHOULD NOT ALWAYS BE NORTHERNERS THAT WILL RULE NIGERIA LAMENTED THAT IN THE LAST SIX TO SEVEN YEARS, THE LEADERSHIP OF NORTHERNERS HAD DONE NOTHING, URGING NIGERIANS TO CHOOSE THEIR LEADERS WISELY COME 2023 GENERAL ELECTIONS.

APC/TINUBU

A CHIEFTAIN OF THE ALL PROGRESSIVE CONGRESS, APC IN PLATEAU STATE, SALEH G ZAZZAGA HAS ASKED THE APC NATIONAL LEADER, BOLA TINUBU TO APOLOGISE TO NIGERIANS OVER COMMENTS MADE YEARS AGO AGAINST NIGERIA.

ZAZZAGA WHILE SPEAKING TO JOURNALISTS IN JOS, THE STATE CAPITAL SAID IF TINUBU DOES NOT APOLOGISE TO NIGERIANS, OLD AND YOUNG FOR SAYING HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN ONE NIGERIA IN 1999 STRESSED THAT IT WOULD PUT HIS CANDIDATURE AND APC IN A BAD LIGHT.

THE APC CHIEFTAIN WHO NOTED THAT THOUGH THE PARTY NATIONAL LEADER MADE THE COMMENT MANY YEARS AGO BUT IT IS NOW BEING RECALLED BY NIGERIANS ESPECIALLY AS HE DECLARED HIS INTENTION TO RUN FOR OFFICE IN 2023 MAINTAINED THAT THE MOST HONOURABLE THING FOR HIM TO DO IS TO COME OUT TO EXPLAIN THE RATIONALE OF THE INTERVIEW TO NIGERIANS AND POINT OUT IF HE WAS MISQUOTED OR NOT.

CORRECTIONAL/REDEPLOYMENT

THE COMPTROLLER GENERAL FOR NIGERIAN CORRECTIONAL SERVICE, NCS, HALIRU NABABA HAS REDEPLOYED NOT LESS THAN 170 OFFICERS TO INJECT NEW IDEAS AND PROMOTE EFFECTIVE COORDINATION OF ACTIVITIES FOR ENHANCED SERVICE DELIVERY IN THE COUNTRY.

IN A STATEMENT ISSUED TO NEWSMEN, NABABA SAID THE REDEPLOYMENT AFFECTED 21 CONTROLLERS OF CORRECTIONS AND 13 DEPUTY CONTROLLERS OF CORRECTIONS, ADDING THAT THE MOVE WAS NOT ONLY A RESPONSE STRATEGY TO THE SECURITY CHALLENGES CONFRONTING THE NCOS BUT IMPERATIVE IN EVOLVING NEW IDEAS THAT WOULD SET THE SERVICE ON A HIGHER PEDESTAL.

THE COMPTROLLER GENERAL WHO SAID WHILE SOME WERE DEPLOYED TO TAKE OVER STATE COMMANDS AND CUSTODIAL CENTRES, OTHERS WERE ASSIGNED NEW RESPONSIBILITIES BOTH AT THE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS AND STATE LEVELS THEREFORE CHARGED ALL OFFICERS AND MEN CONCERNED TO REPORT AT THEIR NEW POSTS AND HIT THE GROUND RUNNING BY GIVING NO SPACE FOR INDOLENCE THAT COULD FURTHER COMPROMISE THE SACREDNESS OF THE CUSTODIAL CENTRES IN NIGERIA.

KWARA/INSTITUTIONS

A FORMER RECTOR OF THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OFFA, KWARA STATE, DR. LATEEF OLATUNJI HAS DECLARED THAT THE SYLLABUS OF NIGERIAN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE REVIEW TO MEET INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS.

DR. OLATUNJI WHOSE TENURE AS THE RECTOR OF THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ELAPSED ON JANUARY 11, 2022 MADE THE DECLARATION WHILE FEATURING ON A RADIO CURRENT AFFAIRS PROGRAMME IN KWARA, SAYING IT IS ALWAYS EASY FOR ANYONE WHO STUDIED ABROAD TO FIT INTO THE NIGERIAN SYSTEM BUT WORRIES THAT NIGERIAN GRADUATES LAG BEHIND IN MANY ASPECTS.

SPEAKING ON THE DICHOTOMY BETWEEN UNIVERSITY AND POLYTECHNIC IN NIGERIA, THE FORMER RECTOR WHO ADMITTED THAT THE LEVEL OF EDUCATION GENERALLY IS LOW BUT THE SYLLABUSES AT ALL NIGERIA TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS ARE DUE FOR SERIOUS REVIEW STRESSED THE NEED FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO REMOVE THE PARADOX,  SAYING IT IS NEEDLESS.

HE THEREFORE ASKED THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT TO REVIEW THE CURRENT SYLLABUS OF HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IN THE COUNTRY.

DOKUBO/IPOB

A FORMER NIGER DELTA MILITANT LEADER, ASARI DOKUBO HAS WARNED THE LEADER OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF BIAFRA, IPOB, MAZI NNAMDI KANU AND HIS GROUP OVER THE CONTINUED SIT-AT-HOME ORDER ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST.

DOKUBO GAVE THE WARNING IN A VIDEO HE PERSONALLY POSTED ON HIS OFFICIAL FACEBOOK PAGE, SAYING IGBOLAND HAD BEEN DESTROYED BY SOME DEMENTED FOLLOWERS AS COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES ARE OFTEN SHUT DOWN WHILE RESIDENTS HIDE AWAY INDOORS OVER FEARS OF ATTACK BY THE LOCKDOWN ENFORCERS.

THE FORMER MILITANT LEADER WHO NOTED THAT HE HAD EVIDENCES WHERE THE FOLLOWERS ENGAGES IN ALL SORTS OF EVILS POINTED  TO ONITSHA WHERE PEOPLE ONLY HAVE 4 DAYS OR SOMETIMES 3 DAYS OF MARKET AND NO SALES.

HE THEREFORE WARNED THAT VERY SOON IGBOS WOULD RISE UP AGAINST THE CONTINUED SIT-AT-HOME ORDER.
