Nigeria recorded 206 new covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours, representing a significant jump in the number of cases compared with the 146 cases logged on Monday, July 19.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, announced this via a series of posts on its social media handle, noting that that the new infections increased the country’s caseload to 169 thousand, 884.

According to the health agency, the 206 new cases were reported from 10 states with Lagos leading with 132 cases, Akwa Ibom followed with 56, Ekiti- 5 cases, Delta- 3, Rivers, Enugu, Jigawa and Katsina logged two cases each and Gombe and the FCT each reported one case.

It added that active cases have now soared to 3,023, while said 23 people recovered from the disease, with cumulative recoveries now at 164,733 but the death toll stood at 2,128.

Deputy Chairman of the Oyo state council of Obas, Oba Francis Alao, disclosed to newsmen that the meeting was originally convened to discuss national developments but had to delve into Igboho’s arrest.

Oba Alao explained that the meeting is sequel to a call from the Ooni over the need to return to the roots to fine-tune ways to resolve worrying political, economic and social issues affecting the country in the last few years.

In the meantime, a former governor of Oyo state, Rashidi Ladoja, and a former national commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Lai Olorode, harped on the need to restructure the country and to as hold wider consultations with Nigerians across board to rectify the anomaly.

TARABA EMIR/HERDSMEN

An Emir from Zamfara state, Abbas Tafida, has issued a 30-day ultimatum to herdsmen in the state to vacate the forest.

Tafida, who is the emir of Muri Empire, issued the ultimatim via a statement released to the press, triggering palpable fear in some parts of Taraba state.

In the statement, the Emir bemoaned that herders who were received into the state, have been terrorizing residents by kidnapping, killing and raping his subjects.

He therefore ordered every Fulani herdsman to vacate forests in the state within 30 days or face severe penalty from the authority.
